Exam ASTAM is a 3-hour written answer exam. It extends the discussion of mathematics of short-term insurance found in Exam FAM-S. FAM-S is the prerequisite for this course. The manual has short answer and multiple-choice exercises. Even though the exam will consist of long multi-part written answer questions, these exercises will help you learn the material.
Abraham Weishaus Ph.D., FSA, CFA, MAAA
Abraham was formerly a financial reporting actuary for Guardian Life Insurance Company. He served on the SOA's Education and Examination Committee for 11 years. He also taught exam preparation courses for the Actuarial Society of Greater New York (ASNY) for 15 years, for CAMAR for 6 years, and for St. Johns University for 5 years. Abe is currently a professor at Columbia University, where he has been teaching for over 10 years. He has been an ASM author for over 20 years and publishes material for exams P, FAM, ALTAM, ASTAM, SRM, MAS-I, and MAS-II.
Wenjun Jiang, Ph.D.
Wenjun Jiang is an assistant professor in actuarial data analytics at University of Calgary. He earned his PhD degree in statistics from the University of Western Ontario, his masters degree in actuarial mathematics from Concordia University and a bachelor degree in applied math from Tianjin University. Professor Wang’s research interests include: Design of optimal (re)insurance, risk measures, clustering of financial assets, and dependence structures.
Anas Abdallah, Ph.D.
Anas Abdallah obtained his Engineering and master’s degree in Mathematical and Statistical Modeling from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquees (INSA), in France. He then decided to undertake a MSc. and then a PhD in Actuarial Science, in Canada. His applied thesis has been awarded the Hachemeister prize, by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) in 2016, to recognize the impact on the actuarial industry in North America. Anas has extensive work experience in the insurance industry (2011-2018), where he had the opportunity to work in Corporate Actuarial Services, Research and Innovation team, and Actuarial Pricing & Segmentation department. He joined McMaster University in 2019 as an Assistant Professor in the department of Mathematics & Statistics and he is also the Actuarial and Financial Mathematics (AFM) program coordinator. Thanks to the applied research and engagement with the industry, the AFM program was awarded the 2020 CAS University Award. Anas Abdallah’s research lies in the area of Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance, and more particularly in pricing/ratemaking and reserving.
